About the Galleries, Portfolios & Pictures In the last 27 years or so I have been photographing the world around me intermittently. In essence my photographic work and output is a history of my life, interests and observations, it is truly a personal viewpoint of the world. During this time I have produced around 20,000 images with the vast majority in my beloved Black & White. I do shoot in colour, I’m not prejudiced against it but I just prefer Black & White for many subjects. Hence the majority of the images presented here are monochrome, (even some of the colour ones). The images currently in the galleries are a good cross section of my work, they are presented in no particular order but are roughly organised into themes or projects. There are recurring themes, such as; sea, coast, water, industry, structures, ruins, decay, transport, details, texture, geometry, shape, friends, architecture and monuments, to name a few. There are very few things I have not attempted to photograph at some point or other and in fact the only things I will not now photograph are weddings. My photography has been mostly unstructured, basically I went somewhere on a whim and photographed whatever turned up. Nowadays I do more planning of what I want to photograph but I don’t go overboard with it as I like spontaneity. There are some favourite places and subjects I return to time and time again. All the Black & White photography is done by using film and photographic materials. As a matter of course the Black & White prints are selenium toned to give them greater protection from the possible effects of oxidising gases in the atmosphere. Sepia and other types of toned prints are available of some subjects. The colour photography is predominantly from transparencies but includes some work from negatives. The colour prints are predominantly inkjet ones on “photographic” quality paper. I have no immediate plans to go to digital image capture for my own work but when digital images or files are required then I produce scans from negatives or prints of an appropriate size and quality required for the application. Most of my photographs are made using the natural light available at the time - (no matter what the weather is doing) - apart from studio work I seldom use flash or artificial lighting of any sort. As a result up-rating films and fiddling around with processing times has been quite common. Favourite film developers are ID-11, Microphen and DD-X. My pictures have been taken on a variety of cameras and film formats but the main ones in use are a pair of venerable 35mm Canon A-1s, (I’ve had both from new for around 25 years). My most used lenses are a pair of 28 mm and an 80 -210 mm Zoom. The Black & White film stock I’ve used covers several generations of the Ilford range, (current favourites being Delta100 & 400, HP5 Plus and SFX200), but some Kodak and Agfa films have crept in along the way from time to time. The photo printing papers used are mostly from the range of Ilford Multigrade products and chemicals from various sources. For colour I’ve mostly used Fuji transparency and negative films but at some time or other I’ve tried out colour films from most major and several minor manufacturers. All the inkjet paper used for my colour prints is currently Ilford Galerie Classic pearl surface and the ink is from Hewlett Packard.
