Professional Biography

Black and White photography using traditional materials is my field of expertise. I love all photography, but particularly that unique view and interpretation that working in Black and White can bring to a subject. However, I will work in colour when the mood takes me.

My professional involvement and passion for photography started in 1977 when I joined Ilford Ltd as a junior research and development assistant at their factory in Mobberley, Cheshire, England, working on the design of photographic papers. Subsequently I have spent most of my time employed on the manufacturing and product support side of the photo business but at the same time producing my own photographs. (I have in fact been taking and making photographs since about the age of 8; my first camera was an Ensign roll film one – anyone remember them – sadly I no longer have it.)

The first part of my career with Ilford Ltd was spent working in R&D, then quality control and chemical raw material testing, whereas the last 16 years with them were spent in the Marketing/Technical Service Dept. Where I eventually became one of their designated “experts” on Black and White photography and helped the company to design, develop and produce film, papers, chemistry, equipment and their customers to use the products and build their businesses.

Over the years I’ve gained much experience and acquired some knowledge of photography and the photographic business but oddly I never acquired any academic photographic training – I never seemed to get around to it. All that I know has been learnt on “the job” through working with photographic products, photographers, printers, laboratories and the excellent colleagues I had.

Sadly I left the Ilford Imaging company when it hit financial troubles at the end of 2004 and since then I’ve been developing Right Eye Pictures as a vehicle for my own photographic work and services.

As part of these services in January 2006 I started a 12 month contract working with "The Centre for Modern Optics" based at the "Optic Technium" in St Asaph (Llanelwy), North Wales, www.optictechnium.com. Here I am helping the group to develop materials for holographic applications. This is an exciting new departure for me but links well with my interest in all things silver halide and my own photographic work.

I feel fortunate and privileged to be able spend my time working at something that I feel so passionately about and I hope this passion shows through the work I’ve displayed here.
